Papa
We would show up at Grandpa and Grandma Reid's house for a visit - and Papa would be just inside the kitchen door at the back of the house playing "penny ante" with friends...
...we, as young boys could wander over to "the shop" just across the road from the house to get a dime soda from the machine, one of those low chest machines with a hinged lid; each flavor of the soda in a narrow track close around the necks of the heavy glass 10 ounce bottles; we would slide our choice to the "exit gate" which would release the bottle - those sodas tasted so cold and delicious and could be finished before they got warm - maybe 10 oz. was the optimum quantity - later when we saw the "Mean Joe Green" Coke ads and saw him chug a whole Coke from a shimmering glass bottle and finish with eyes watering - we recalled drinking sodas from Papa's machine.

I remember Grandpa in his over-stuffed chair, smoking his pipe. I want to say that pipe smoke dominates my memory, but the truth is - it was a combination of pipe smoke and corned beef and cabbage. What a combination - I think the smell is in my pores.
Did he ever talk?
